Featuring a half-cardioid polar pattern, the BL8 microphone incorporates a hand-crafted capsule similar to the one found in sE Electronics’ sE8 small-diaphragm condenser microphone. This specialised capsule with a three-micron diaphragm ensures exceptional transient response. Additionally, the BL8 is compatible with the capsule used in the sE8 Omni microphone, allowing users to switch the capsules and transform the BL8 into an omnidirectional microphone rather than a cardioid.
sE Electronics has emphasized the BL8’s ability to accurately reproduce low frequencies, making it particularly suitable for miking kick drums. However, its capabilities extend beyond that, as the microphone is also designed to excel in room miking, immersive ambience recording, and capturing the nuances of acoustic pianos.
In addition to its default frequency response, the BL8 offers two optional voicing modes: Classic and Modern. These modes provide different mid-range EQ cuts, allowing users to tailor the sound to their preferences. The microphone also includes switchable -10 dB and -20 dB pad options for handling high sound pressure levels, along with an 80 Hz or 100 Hz high-pass filter to eliminate unwanted low-frequency noise. The BL8 incorporates high-quality components and utilises transformer-less Class-A circuitry, resulting in ample headroom and minimal distortion.
For easy installation in permanent setups, the BL8 microphone features secure mounting brackets that can be accessed by removing the microphone’s casing. It is also compatible with The Kelly SHU FLATZ, an isolation mounting solution specifically designed for placing microphones inside kick drums.
