The UK brand is positioning itself as a lower-cost match for the established drumhead names, and its full range is on Australian shelves now.

Code Drum Heads has landed in Australia, with distributor Dynamic Music now carrying the UK brand’s range. Code has built its name on matching the established head makers on quality while coming in cheaper, and the local rollout brings its coated and clear series across tom, snare and bass sizes to Australian drummers and stores.

A few big names dominate the drumhead market: Remo, Evans and Aquarian. Code comes in offering comparable heads for less.

Every Code head is built around a rim design the company calls Grip-Tight. A deep, double-knurled steel core is crimped into an aluminium or steel outer rim, depending on the range, so the head stays put in the hoop. Built that way, it tunes easily, holds its tuning and resonates freely. The heads use PET polyester film. On the coated versions, a hard-wearing texture coating tames the tone slightly, toughens the surface and gives brushes something to bite on. Code’s pitch is longevity – heads you change only when you want a new sound, not because the old one has given up.

Code’s range includes well beyond a dozen heads:

  • Signal – a thicker 14-mil single-ply with deep tone and plenty of attack
  • Law – a 10-mil single-ply with a centre dot for a more focused hit and extra durability
  • Generator – a twin-ply head (two 7.5-mil plies) for a warmer, more durable feel
  • DNA – a standard 10-mil single-ply, in clear or coated
  • Boomer – Nicko McBrain’s signature snare and tom heads, with a reverse donut dot
  • Blast – a single-ply kick head with a built-in dampening ring to control overtones

The materials are fully recyclable too, so old heads can go to a recycling centre instead of landfill. Code’s range is available now through Dynamic Music, with stock reaching Australian retailers.
