The Avalanches win the Australian Music Prize for 2020

Words by Will Brewster

The trailblazing electronic duo released their third album We Will Always Love You last year.

Australian electronic royalty The Avalanches have been awarded the coveted Sound Merch Australian Music Prize (AMP) for the best Australian album of 2020.

The pioneering electronic duo’s third album We Will Always Love You, which was released to rave reviews late last year, was selected as the best local release by an expert panel of 48 judges, comprised of a number of journalists and industry workers.

Over 80 Australian albums were submitted for consideration for this year’s prize, with a shortlist released in January revealing the nine acts who were eligible for the top honours, including Tame Impala, Gordon Koang, Miiesha, Emma Donovan and Blake Scott.

‘We’re so thrilled to be the winners of the prestigious AMP Award and be amongst the esteemed winners of the past,’ Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi of The Avalanches said in a statement shared today.

‘We’d love to thank everyone involved in making this award happen especially Sound Merch, also to the many people who helped us put this record together. A truly special day for us and we’re so grateful.’

The Australian Music Prize founder Scott Murphy also expressed his congratulations to the electronic act, who also won $20,000 from Sound Merch as part of the prize.

‘Winning The AMP this time is a ‘mean feat’ as there were plenty of great contenders so I congratulate The Avalanches on winning the 16th AMP, you deserve it. I’d like to thank all our judges and partners for pulling off our 16th prize during difficult times.’
