Two of Jimi Hendrix’s guitars are headed to auction this December

Words by Will Brewster

A rare left-handed Stratocaster and a custom-built acoustic are up for grabs.

Could there ever be a better flex than being the custodian of a Stratocaster previously owned by Jimi Hendrix?

As part of Julien’s Auctions upcoming Icons & Idols Trilogy auction series, a left-handed 1969 Olympic White Fender Stratocaster owned and played by the maestro is set to go under the hammer this month, giving cashed-up fans a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a genuine piece of rock history.

The Stratocaster, which features a classic alder and maple construction and boasts the instrument’s original pickups, is locked in to hit the auction block on December 1, and is expected to fetch a price of US $300,000 – $500,000.

The Strat will also come with notarised letters and a photograph to certify its authenticity.

The Icons & Idols Trilogy will also see a custom-built acoustic guitar, made by William C. Stahl for Hendrix in the ’60s, join the Stratocaster on the auction block.

A parlour build with a spruce top and Brazilian rosewood back and sides, the guitar also features a mahogany neck and ebony fretboard, and features bespoke mother-of-pearl inlays for an impeccable aesthetic.

The stunning acoustic is expected to fetch $200,000 – $500,000, and will also come with a number of documents to certify its authenticity, including a ledger from Jimi Hendrix Experience bassist Noel Redding testifying that Hendrix once took the guitar to the cinemas with Eric Clapton and a female friend.

On top of featuring the two Hendrix rarities, the Icons & Idols Trilogy auction will also see one of Bob Marley’s acoustic guitars go up for grabs, as well as two of Eddie Van Halen’s guitars and other relics from some of the biggest names in rock music today.
