fedDSP packs four optical compressors into one plugin with OPTO

The zero-latency plugin runs four distinct optical modes plus drive, transformer and upward-compression tools, for anything from vocals to the mix bus.

fedDSP’s OPTO is a zero-latency optical compressor plugin, built for the smooth, musical gain reduction optos are known for even when they’re working hard. Optos rarely sound alike, though, so rather than model just one, OPTO packs four distinct optical characters into a single plugin, each with its own feel and saturation, plus a set of tone and drive tools alongside the compressor.

Catch up on all the latest news here.

THREE is the fast, in-your-face setting, good for pulling punch out of a source, while TWO runs slower and warmer with a vintage feel that suits vocals, bass, piano and acoustic material. ONE is smoother and more hi-fi, perfect for modern vocals, loops and hip-hop, while ZERO is the cleanest and most transparent of the four. Each changes the compressor’s feel, saturation and response, not just its speed.

DRIVE adds body and harmonic density without tipping into distortion, TRAFO is a transformer emulation that brings a hardware-like thickness and bloom, and DETAIL is a gentle upward compressor that lifts quieter detail and presence without pushing the top end harsh. CLARITY, TONE and DEPTH handle brightness, overall balance and low-end weight.

The advanced settings hold high-pass and low-pass filters, a parallel mix knob, dual mono and stereo modes, auto gain and a variable sidechain high-pass that focuses the compression on the right part of the signal.

OPTO suits single sources like vocals, bass and drums as much as buses and mastering. It runs in AU, VST3 and AAX on Mac, and VST3 and AAX on Windows.
