NAMM 2021: Mackie add multi-track recording to Onyx mixers, debut new SRT PA speakers

Words by Will Brewster

Live sound has never looked better.

With four new digital mixers and an entire new powered speaker range to offer, Mackie have reaffirmed their status as titans of the pro audio sector with their latest load of product launches at NAMM today.

Summary

  • Mackie’s NAMM launch includes new 8, 12, 16 or 24 track mixers
  • New mixers in the Onyx range now feature multi-track recording via USB
  • The SRT Speaker series features three speakers and a subwoofer
  • The SRT range packs 1600w of Class-D amplifier power

What’s going on with NAMM this year? Here’s our nifty guide to navigating the greatest gear fest of the calendar year.

Mackie Onyx Mixers

Once again returning to the mixer blueprint that made them such a renowned name in pro audio to begin with, the new Onyx range consists of four unique models – the Onyx 8, Onyx 12, Onyx 16 and Onyx 24 – with each number designating the amount of channels offered by each unit.

All Onyx units feature a three-band Perkins EQ for each channel that’s modelled on classic British EQs from the ’60s and ’70s, as well as a collection of low-noise Onyx preamps with up to 60dB of gain on tap.

Users can record up to 24 tracks of audio at 24-bit/96kHz from the Onyx mixer series via USB, with four additional channels also being able to stream back from your recording computer through an assignable return. You can even track a stereo mix directly to an SD card, and there’s also a bunch of onboard digital effects to assign to each channel.

Mackie SRT powered speakers

New year, new suffix. The Mackie SRM range is a bona fide classic in pro audio and live sound circles – and a noted favourite here in the Mixdown office. Now, Mackie look to prolong their influence with the SRT series.

Providing a professional alternative to the SRM range, the Mackie SRT is aimed at users looking for a PA system to suit a range of top tier applications, ranging from floor wedges to instals and beyond. Each unit packs an onboard 1600w Class-D amplifier to deliver a huge amount of power to fill out most room sizes, with transparent system limiting and protection ensuring nothing but the finest performance.

With three different units on offer – there’s the 2×10″ SRT210, the 2×12″ SRT212 and the whopping 2×15″ SRT215, plus a powerful SRS18 subwoofer to boot – the SRT series should have all bases covered for your live sound needs.

Each unit also features advanced impulse DSP acoustic tuning to result in the sharpest sound possible and a custom Sym-X horn to minimise distortion and increase output, while a four-channel, colour display digital mixer with mic and line inputs (and Bluetooth control!) allows for easy mixing wherever you are.

All speakers in the SRT range can also be connected wirelessly over a range of 800 metres via Bluetooth, and can be controlled remotely through the SRT Connect App. Find out all the specs here – we reckon these bad boys are going to get a massive run once gigging is back to its full capacity!
