Words by Sam McNiece

Made from 3D scans of the original guitars.

The year is 1958 and Gibson have just unveiled their wacky new Flying V and Explorer guitars. The original guitars shipped in such small numbers that only a handful of people were able to get their hands on them. With that, Gibson have announced a reissue of these iconic guitars in the same numbers as was originally available.

What you need to know:

  • Gibson have announced to the world their recreations of original 1958 Explorer and Flying V guitars.
  • Each guitar has been 3D scanned from vintage original versions including their cases and recreated by Gibson Custom Shop.
  • There is only 19 Explorers and 81 Flying V’s available, and they are only purchasable within continental USA.

Made with Korina and Brazilian Rosewood, all the unique parts of these two guitars has been re-created in this Collector’s Edition series. The 1958 Explorer and Flying V have been in development for three years, to ensure they look, sound and feel exactly like the original.

Gibson Custom Shop creates some of the best guitars around, through their skilled luthiers working on limited run high quality instruments.

On creating the guitar, Cesar Geulkian, Brand President of Gibson Brands says “we utilized 3D scanning technology to scan multiple museum model Flying V and Explorers (made in 1958) to create the most authentic and identical clones humanly possible. The Collector’s Edition is limited to 19 Explorers and 81 Flying V’s and feature Murphy Lab ageing, Brazilian rosewood fingerboards and historic recreation of the cases, covers and case candy.”

Indeed the cases and guitars through the ageing process look like they were made in the 50s, in a good way! It’s the latest in brands recreating old guitars with ageing to make sure they play like a well worn in guitar should.

These guitars are available in the same numbers as was prescribed when they were first created, 19 Explorers and 81 Flying Vs. For those looking to snag one can contact Gibson through their website and if you miss out, don’t fret, Gibson will be releasing an extended core run of these in September 2021.
