BOSS adds the compact Katana-25 to its amp range

Words by Mixdown

The new 25-watt combo is designed for home playing, with six amp characters, more than 60 effects, Bluetooth and a half-watt mode for late nights.

BOSS has added a 25-watt model to its Katana range, built for playing at home and pitched at people picking up a guitar for the first time as well as players coming back to one after a break.

The Katana line has been around since 2016, and the new model uses the same BOSS Tube Logic approach as its bigger siblings, with the speaker and a 25-watt reactive analogue power section designed to respond to the player’s dynamics the way a valve amp would. The open-back cabinet houses a custom eight-inch speaker, and BOSS has shaped the enclosure to get as full a sound as possible out of a small box.

Six amp characters cover pop, blues, country, classic rock and high-gain metal, and one of them is set up specifically for acoustic-electric guitars. More than 60 effects from the BOSS catalogue are on board, with up to five running at once, while 20 presets come ready to play and another ten slots are left free for your own sounds. The panel handles basic preamp and effect adjustments and memory recall without the app, and there’s a tap tempo button for delays alongside a built-in tuner.

Borrowing from the stage-sized Katanas, a Power Control switch drops the amp from full output to half a watt, so the sound of an amp being pushed hard is available at a volume that won’t wake the household.

Bluetooth does two jobs on the Katana-25, streaming audio from a phone so you can play along with your own music library and connecting to the BOSS Tone Studio app for deeper editing and access to user-made sounds on BOSS Tone Exchange. The app’s Session feature plays YouTube content inside the app and can trigger memory changes at set points in a song’s timeline, which takes care of switching from a rhythm tone to a lead sound mid-song without touching the amp.
