The live streaming partnership between YouTube and the Coachella festival takes a further step in 2022.

What you need to know:

  • Australians can buy exclusive Coachella merchandise from festival acts on their Shopify store.
  • The merch will drop on Saturday April 16 and be available for purchase the entire day on the livestream watch page.
  • More than 16 billion dollars is spent in Australia on shopping via social media each year.

For the first time, Australians (and those in countries where Coachella’s Shopify store is available) can buy exclusive Coachella merchandise from festival acts Flume, Billie Eilish, and Brockhampton, as well as the festival’s items itself.

The merch will drop on Saturday April 16 and be available for purchase the entire day on the livestream watch page.

The same set of merch will also be available to buy on Coachella’s second weekend, the following Saturday.

“We’re always trying to deepen the roots [with] fans and artists and one of the best ways that you could do it is through merchandise,” said Lyor Cohen, YouTube’s global head of music.

“The whole idea of exclusive merch drops is just so fans and artists could have more intersections together.”

There are two reasons why merch has become part of the Coachella/YouTube offering.

Like most major festivals, the music desert event is as much a fashion statement, both with the performers and attendees.

Coachella’s April dateline has also made it the unofficial start of the northern hemisphere’s summer fashion and beauty brands season for the 75 thousand who attend in person and the millions (41 million in 2018 according to YouTube) who livestream it around the world.

The Weekend 1 live stream is sponsored by cosmetics brand Rimmel in Australia.

The second reason is how shopping via socials has exploded in Australia, up 40 per cent year-on-year and up 700 per cent from 2019.

According to a Paypal report, 25 per cent of Aussies shop on social, the number rising to one-in-three for those aged under 40.

More than 16 billion dollars is spent in Australia on shopping via social media each year.

Other offerings on the Coachella livestream are artist interviews and mini-docs, YouTube Shorts behind-the-scenes content and sweepstakes, Live Chat, YouTube Premium pre-parties

The Australian acts playing there in 2022 are, aside from Flume, The Avalanches, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Amyl & The Sniffers, Sampa The Great, Hayden James, The Chats, Skegss, Dom Dolla, and Logic1000.

For now, head to the Coachella store for merch and keep your eyes peeled during the live stream to get on the exclusive drops.
