Celemony has added a modern, funky upright bass to Tonalic, its plugin that drops real session players into a project. The performances come from Berlin bassist Paul Kleber, opening a new corner of the library – groove-driven acoustic bass lines built for hip-hop and pop rather than the jazz, latin and swing his earlier Tonalic sets covered.
Made by the Melodyne team, Tonalic works from actual recordings rather than MIDI or loops, reshaping a musician’s real performance to fit your chords, tempo and groove. The library grows at least every three months with new players and styles, and Kleber’s funk lines lock in with the drums and percussion already there.

A classically trained player who moved into jazz, pop and electronic music, Kleber has been part of Berlin’s jazz scene since the mid-1990s, with Jazzanova Live and the Moka Efti Orchestra among his credits and studio work for Emilíana Torrini, Fink, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Nina Hagen. He plays with a groove musician’s timing as much as a jazz player’s, keep his basslines right at home home in a pop or hip-hop track.
