Signed by Joe Bonamassa and Seymour W. Duncan, only three of the limited sets are reaching Australia through Australis in mid-October.
Seymour Duncan’s Custom Shop has recreated the soapbar P90s out of one of Joe Bonamassa’s favourite guitars, a 1961 SG he calls the “Pawn Shop Special”, and turned them into a limited signature set. It’s the Custom Shop’s first P90 project with Bonamassa, after years of recreating pickups from other instruments in his collection.

A P90 splits the difference between a single coil and a humbucker, clear and quick to respond but with a thick, barking midrange that really comes out once there’s some overdrive behind it. It’s the sound behind plenty of late-’60s playing, from players like Pete Townshend, Carlos Santana and Leslie West. It’s also what Bonamassa heard in the Pawn Shop Special and wanted to pass on, leading him to the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop.
To get there, Seymour Duncan built the set around Alnico 4 magnets and a custom wind, reproducing the airy top end and sizzle of the originals. The Custom Shop went as far as making a historically accurate dimpled bottom plate for the project, matching the covers and the smaller details of a P90 from that era. The pickups are wax potted to Bonamassa’s preference, so they hold together at volume no matter how loud the amps behind them get.
The set is pitched at both collectors and players, with each one including a Nerdville #001 luggage tag, limited-edition packaging and a Certificate of Authenticity signed by both Joe Bonamassa and Seymour W. Duncan. Only three sets are reaching Australia through Australis Music Group, expected mid-October, at an RRP of $999.
