Show & Tell With: Ryan Siew from Polaris

What piece of equipment do you have to show us today?

Today I have my custom shop Mayones Regius 7 guitar. It’s one of my main live axes and I absolutely love it to bits.

How did you come across this particular item?

I remember coming across these guitars for the first time online and was instantly hooked by the aesthetics and a build quality, not to mention all of my favourite artists played them – so that was a plus. Fast forward a few years and I’m now lucky enough to be working with the gentlemen at Mayones and this is my third guitar with them.

What is it that you like about it so much?

This guitar has everything I want and need on an instrument, and is definitely the most pissed-off sounding guitar I have. A huge part of our tone comes down to the Bare Knuckle Juggernaut pickup set I have installed in this guitar. It’s a modern voiced high output pickup but can also cover quite a lot of range of tones from clean to mid gain to the chunkier rhythm sounds we use. It’s also very unforgiving, clear and mid focused, attributes that lends the set to our style quite nicely.

How do you use it and how has it shaped the way you write music?

I think a guitar is more than a sum of its parts, you really have to connect with an instrument, and this guitar just feels right. When a guitar is so good that it just inspires you to write and create, what more could you ask for?

Tell us a little about what you have coming up?

We’re currently gearing up to go on tour for a good while. First up we’re doing a headline run of Australia, then we’re home for a day and jetting straight to Europe for the first time ever for the ‘Never Say Die’ tour with Emmure, Chelsea Grin and Deez Nuts to name a few.

The Mortal Coil is out on Friday November 3 through Resist Records/Sharptone. Catch Polaris on tour throughout Australia this month. Find out how the band approached their debut album in our interview with Polaris’ Rick Schneider.
