Studio Technologies launches a Dante-enabled beltpack built for broadcast in the field

Studio Technologies' new Model 385 combines a high-performance microphone preamplifier with integrated intercom functionality in a compact, Dante-enabled beltpack designed for broadcast sports and live event production.

Studio Technologies has announced the Model 385 Mic/Intercom Beltpack, a compact Dante-enabled unit aimed at broadcast and live event audio professionals working with parabolic microphones, boom poles and other specialised microphones in the field.

One PoE Ethernet connection powers the whole thing – on-air microphone capture and intercom communication in a single rugged beltpack. For sports broadcast crews and live entertainment teams working in fast-moving, high-pressure environments, having one less cable to worry about is worth quite a bit.

The Model 385 connects via a standard 3-pin XLR and supports both dynamic and condenser microphones, with selectable P48 phantom power for the latter. The preamp offers adjustable gain from 20 to 65 dB in 1 dB increments, converting the analogue signal to 24-bit digital audio through a Dante transmitter channel. Intercom runs through a 5-pin XLR headset connection, with a pushbutton talk switch routing the headset microphone through a second Dante transmitter channel to other Dante-enabled beltpacks and intercom devices. Adjustable gain and low-voltage electret power support are included on that input, too. Three push-in/push-out rotary controls let users mix up to four audio sources in the headphones — the main mic preamp output and two incoming Dante receiver channels, typically used for intercom and programme audio. An integrated sidetone function lets users hear their own headset microphone for confidence monitoring.

“By combining exceptional audio performance, Dante networking, and flexible monitoring capabilities into a single rugged device, the Model 385 gives field audio personnel an efficient and intuitive solution for demanding production environments,” says Studio Technologies’ Gordon Kapes.

The Model 385 is Dante Domain Manager compatible and AES67 compliant, so it works across a wide range of third-party Dante-enabled gear as well as Studio Technologies’ own range. The free STcontroller software handles setup – microphone gain, phantom power, headset routing, sidetone and talkback behaviour – and supports VenueView event monitoring. The aluminium enclosure includes an integral belt clip.
