DJ ranks tenth globally but sits at number one in Australia, ahead of actor, paramedic and pilot.
If you’ve got aspirations to get behind the decks, data suggests you’re not alone. A new global study from Remitly, which analysed Google searches across 145 countries to track career aspirations, found that in 2026 “how to be a DJ” is Australia’s most searched dream job, ahead of actor, paramedic, pilot and even doctor.

Globally, DJ sits at number ten, but Australia’s outsized interest in the profession likely reflects the country’s recent run of international success. Sonny Fodera, Fisher and Dom Dolla have all broken through to headline international festivals and tours in recent years, putting a very visible local face on what a career as a professional DJ can look like.
There’s no straight-and-narrow path to a DJ career – it spans music production, performance and business in equal measure. Some DJs build their name through residencies and club nights, finding their niche over time, while others come up through production, releasing original music before stepping behind the decks. DJing is also widely seen as a lucrative side hustle – whether you’re playing weddings or birthdays – and with the cost of living continuing to affect Australians, it’s no surprise people are drawn to well-paid work that operates outside standard business hours. DJ gear has also become far more accessible, making it easier to experiment at home before committing to a professional setup.
The study, now in its third edition, draws on annual Google search volume from May 2025 to May 2026 across 424 different career options. Actor placed second, while mortgage broker snuck into third – and notably, YouTuber placed fifth, suggesting Australians are drawn to creative, entrepreneurial careers.
