The same mic Harry Vanda used to record Let There Be Rock gets a numbered, matte black collector's release
Neumann has announced the U 47 fet Bon Scott Edition, a strictly limited run of 300 individually numbered microphones launching globally on the 9th of July, what would have been Bon Scott’s 80th birthday. Built on the current U 47 fet reissue, it’s sonically identical to the standard model, with the differences being entirely in the finish, packaging and presentation.

In the 1970s, producers Harry Vanda and George Young chose the U 47 fet for Bon Scott’s sessions, with Vanda recalling that it let Bon’s voice “sit best with the guitars.” The mic’s headroom – up to 137 dB SPL, or 147 dB with the pad engaged – and midrange character meant Scott’s vocals cut through without losing their edge, across early AC/DC records, including Let There Be Rock.
The Bon Scott Edition comes in a matte black finish with Scott’s name and signature on the body, packaged in an exclusive black wooden presentation box. Each unit ships with a collector’s booklet featuring an interview with Vanda. Beyond the finish and packaging, it’s the same U 47 fet that’s been a studio staple since its return to production in 2014.
Neumann will donate a portion of proceeds from each sale to Support Act Australia, which provides financial and wellbeing support to Australian artists and music industry workers. With only 300 units available worldwide, moving quickly is probably wise.
