At the heart of this update is Logue SDK compatibility, which opens the microKORG2 to custom oscillators and effects. Users can now load third-party creations or develop their own using KORG’s open-source development environment. The free Librarian application for Windows and macOS makes loading custom content more straightforward, connecting the instrument to a global community of sound designers and developers.
Sound design purists will appreciate the collaboration with Sinevibes, who’ve optimised 15 plugins specifically for the microKORG2’s architecture. Standouts include the Albedo v2 granular cloud reverb and Corrosion v3 multi-algorithm distortion. Two brand-new plugins—Atom multi-mode filter and Drift v2 wind turbulence modeller—are available as free downloads.
The sound engine itself has been refined. OSC3 can now run in Low mode, functioning as a wide-range LFO that enables everything from high-speed AM/FM modulation to metallic, bell-like timbres. It’s also been added as a virtual patch source, delivering complex tonal movements without sacrificing sonic depth.
Performance capabilities have expanded, too. A new split function divides the keyboard at any point, letting you assign bass to your left hand and the leads to your right. Meanwhile, the loop recorder gains step recording for precise, one-note-at-a-time composition, plus a slice mode that divides recorded loops across the keyboard for triggering individual segments.
Loop import/export functionality rounds out the update, allowing 16-bit/48kHz WAV files to move between the microKORG2 and your DAW.
Version 2.0 represents a substantial evolution for an already capable instrument, available now as a free update for existing owners.
