The professional audio manufacturer has responded to user requests with a native connection upgrade for its flagship converter.

Apogee Electronics has announced native Thunderbolt 3 connectivity for the Symphony Mk II, marking a significant update to its flagship audio interface. Starting now, all new units ship with the upgraded connection, and existing owners can purchase a separate Thunderbolt 3 module to bring their system up to spec.

The move addresses one of the most requested features from Apogee’s user base–a direct connection to modern Mac systems without the need for adapters. According to CEO Betty Bennett, the company recognises that Symphony Mk II represents a substantial investment for audio professionals working in environments where reliability is key.

Beyond eliminating the adapter dongle life, the Thunderbolt 3 module offers broader cable compatibility. Users can now connect with any TB3, TB4, or TB5 cable, including optical variants that enable significantly longer cable runs between your interface and computer. That flexibility proves to be particularly valuable in larger studios where rack positioning is important.

This is purely a connectivity upgrade, and the Symphony Mk II’s AD/DA conversion, latency performance, and modular I/O configuration remain unchanged. Existing drivers and software continue to work exactly as before, so current users won’t need to relearn anything or adapt their setup beyond the physical connection.

For those already running Symphony Mk II with Thunderbolt 2 adapters, Apogee emphasises that nothing needs to change unless you want it to. Current setups remain fully compatible and supported, and the new module simply provides an option for those seeking a more streamlined connection or who want to future-proof their rig.

Installation is a simple, DIY process for anyone comfortable with basic hardware assembly, though dealers and Apogee can handle installation for those who’d rather not tackle it themselves.

New Symphony Mk II units featuring Thunderbolt 3 are available now through authorised Apogee dealers, identifiable by ‘TB3’ in the part number.
