Janick Gers joins Seymour Duncan’s Iron Maiden pickup collection

Words by Mixdown

The guitarist’s new Strat set and loaded pickguard sit alongside Dave Murray and Steve Harris signature models, all now in individually illustrated Eddie packaging.

Janick Gers now has a set of Seymour Duncan pickups to call his own, joining bandmates Dave Murray and Steve Harris in the company’s Iron Maiden collection. The collection is also moving into new illustrated packaging, with a different take on Eddie for every product.

Catch up on all the latest news here.

The Janick Gers Signature Strat Set pairs a JB Jr. for Strat in the neck and bridge with a Hot Rails for Strat in the middle, and it comes either as a pickup set or as a loaded pickguard. All three are single-coil-sized humbuckers, so a Strat gets the high-output lead tone and heavy rhythm crunch Gers has brought to Maiden since joining in 1990. The neck and bridge pairing also mirrors the JB Jr. setup in his Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Fender Stratocaster.

Dave Murray’s set flips that layout, with Hot Rails in the neck and bridge and a JB Jr. in the middle. It’s built in Santa Barbara with small ceramic magnets, four-conductor wiring and wax potting. The loaded pickguard version comes in pearloid, white or black, which makes it a straight swap for players after the smooth legato runs Murray has been playing with the band since the late 1970s.

On the bass side, the Steve Harris Signature P-Bass pickup is a medium-output Custom Shop design with a lift in the low mids and plenty of high-end attack. It’s built from hand-ground Alnico 5 rod magnets with a custom wind of around 13k DCR, and it drops straight into any split-coil P-Bass. That puts the galloping right hand Harris has driven the band with since founding it in 1975 a single install away.

Every set and pickguard now ships in its own illustrated box, each one a reworking of the band’s official artwork with Eddie front and centre and a design unique to that product, so Maiden collectors have a reason to keep the packaging long after the pickups go in.
