The new kit adds an extra tom and larger playing surfaces to the Nitro Ultimate platform whilst maintaining the stand-mounted hi-hat controller and mesh heads across all drums.
Alesis has stretched its Nitro Ultimate electronic drum kit into new territory with the Ultimate XL, adding a tenth piece and expanded playing surfaces for drummers looking for more room to work with. The kit builds on the nine-piece Nitro Ultimate foundation while replacing the Crimson MK3 in Alesis’ lineup.
The XL configuration spreads four 10-inch dual-zone mesh toms across the kit – one more than the standard Ultimate – giving players additional voice options and more physical space for fills and patterns. Cymbals follow suit with two 12-inch dual-zone crashes and a 14-inch triple-zone ride, all mounted on a rugged four-post steel rack with locking clamps for stability during energetic playing.

Alesis has retained the stand-mounted hi-hat controller system from the original Ultimate, which responds to traditional hi-hat stands (sold separately) rather than cheaper pedal-only solutions. This design captures the natural feel of opening and closing the hats, from tight grooves through to wide-open accents, maintaining the dynamic response acoustic players expect when transitioning to electronic drums.
The 12-inch dual-zone mesh snare features metal hoops for rim shots and cross-stick articulations, whilst the 8-inch mesh kick tower provides the tactile response of a beater striking a head rather than triggering a pad. Mesh heads across all drums deliver quieter practice sessions compared to rubber alternatives while still providing realistic rebound.
Powering the kit is the Nitro Ultimate XL drum module loaded with over 640 sounds spanning drums, cymbals, percussion and electronic tones. Drummers can choose from 36 factory kits or build 16 custom kits tailored to specific genres or playing styles. Nine trigger inputs via DB25 plus two via quarter-inch TRS accommodate the expanded configuration, with MIDI over USB connecting to virtual instruments and recording software.
Connectivity covers the essentials: dual TRS main outputs, 3.5mm stereo headphone output for silent practice, 3.5mm TRS stereo auxiliary input for playing along with backing tracks, and Bluetooth audio streaming for wireless connection to phones and tablets.
The Nitro Ultimate XL ships as a complete 10-piece kit ready to assemble, designed for intermediate to advanced players seeking an authentic feel and response alongside studio-quality sounds. Dimensions come in at 970mm wide, 645mm deep and 345mm high when set up, with a gross weight of 37kg including packaging.
For drummers wanting to expand their playing without disturbing the neighbours, the Alesis Nitro Ultimate XL makes a compelling option.
