Genelec has launched the 8380A, a three-way main monitor designed to deliver reference-grade accuracy in medium-sized control rooms without the footprint of a full-scale system.

Finnish loudspeaker manufacturer Genelec has built its reputation on truthful sound reproduction and exceptional reliability since 1978. With active monitoring systems found in professional studios worldwide, their commitment to research and development continues with the latest release.

Catch up on all the latest news here.

This new midfield monitor joins ‘The Main Ones’ family as a more compact alternative to the five-way 8381A, bringing Genelec’s latest coaxial technology to professional recording, mixing and mastering studios, as well as high-end home listening spaces. Essentially, it’s designed for medium-sized rooms that need serious SPL capability and accuracy without the size of a full-scale main monitoring system.

The 8380A’s performance centres around a 380mm woofer paired with Genelec’s patented MDC (Minimum Diffraction Coaxial) midrange-tweeter assembly. This configuration delivers the kind of dynamics and headroom you’d expect from a much larger system, while still maintaining the precise imaging crucial when mixing.

Thanks to the brand’s DCW (Directivity Control Waveguide) technology, the 8380A can reproduce uncoloured sound both on and off-axis. Two forward-facing reflex ports keep the low-frequency response clean even when you’re pushing levels, and the monitor’s time-aligned design helps you to listen for hours without fatigue.

Power comes from an integrated RAM-L2 amplifier module—500W for the woofer, 250W for the midrange, and 200W for the tweeter—all in a fanless design that produces zero operational noise. This is an important detail when your monitor’s self-generated noise sits at an astonishing 0dB SPL.

As a SAM monitor, the 8380A integrates seamlessly with Genelec’s GLM calibration software, which analyses your room and compensates for acoustic issues automatically. The included GRADE feature goes even further, providing detailed reports on your monitoring environment with specific recommendations for improvement.

Key specifications:

  • Frequency response: 29Hz–43kHz
  • Maximum SPL: 122dB
  • Self-generated noise: 0dB SPL
  • Same dimensions as legacy 1038/1238 models
  • Soffit-mounting compatible

The 8380A makes a compelling option for studios looking to upgrade from legacy Genelec models or for those ready to invest in a main monitoring system.
