The long-standing Sydney institution has been named NAMM Best Community Retail Store and shortlisted as a top-three global finalist for Retailer of the Year.
Fifty years in business is no small feat, but Turramurra Music has marked the milestone with something even rarer—global recognition from the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM). The Sydney-based specialist music retailer has been awarded NAMM Best Community Retail Store and named as one of only three finalists worldwide for the coveted NAMM Retailer of the Year award.
Founded in 1976 on Sydney’s Upper North Shore, Turramurra Music has evolved from a local shopfront into a nationally respected supplier of musical instruments, professional audio systems, and technical services. Over five decades, the business has built a reputation for supporting everyone from first-time players to seasoned professionals, along with schools, venues, churches, and broadcasters across Australia.

NAMM’s international awards recognise excellence in retail leadership, customer experience, education, technical capability, and long-term industry contribution. Being shortlisted as a top-three global finalist places Turramurra Music among an elite group of music retailers worldwide is a testament to the store’s sustained commitment to quality and community.
“It’s a huge honour to see Turramurra Music recognised by NAMM in our 50th year,” said Rob Stevens, founder of Turramurra Music. “This honour belongs to the many dedicated staff—past and present—who have earned the trust of our customers and the community we’ve served since 1976.”
The Best Community Retail Store award highlights the company’s deep engagement with music education and the broader music community. Regular in-store events, workshops, and artist clinics have become staples of the Turramurra experience, alongside support for community programs and charities. NAMM also acknowledged the store’s customer-first philosophy, staff expertise, and expert in-house repairs. These services have become hallmarks of the business.

Mat Stevens, General Manager of Turramurra Music, reflected on the significance of the recognition. “To receive this level of global recognition in our 50th year is incredibly meaningful,” he said. “Being recognised by NAMM at this level reinforces that investing in skilled staff, education, and relationships is important, and that our service-led approach remains relevant—even in a rapidly changing industry.”
What sets Turramurra Music apart is continuity. The business has maintained a deliberate focus on supporting customers through every stage—from their first instrument to professional performance and production, while adapting to seismic shifts in retail, technology, and the music industry itself.

The dual NAMM honours underscore Turramurra Music’s position as one of Australia’s most established and respected specialist music and professional-audio retailers, with a model that balances commercial excellence, technical credibility, and community impact. Not a bad way to celebrate half a century.
