Throughout their decade-long career, the Melbourne three-piece has made a name for itself as one of the country’s most uncompromisingly abstract acts, employing interchanging time signatures, electronic elements and space to create a brooding and unsettling post-punk/post-rock product that’s unlike anything else.
Severe is the band’s latest release, and it comes five years after their last album Little Joy. Like all My Disco releases, it’s a departure from their previous work. As frontman Liam Andrews explained to us in an interview earlier this year, My Disco is ultimately a progressive art project. While all their work is informed by previous releases, the most important thing is the thing that is happening right now, and everything else is well past it’s used by date.
Severe is a sparse and particularly bleak record that draws influence from acts like Bohren and the Club of Gore. See My Disco perform their new material as they head out on tour later this year.
