The next evolution of the compact controller adds Mutate functions, OLED display and enhanced CV/Gate options while maintaining the simplicity that made the original a modern classic.

Arturia has launched KeyStep mk2, an updated version of its popular compact controller and sequencer. Building on the formula that made the original a studio staple, the mk2 iteration introduces generative sequencing tools, improved connectivity and a redesigned interface that keeps creative momentum flowing across modular, hardware and software setups.

Catch up on all the latest news here.

The KeyStep mk2 retains the 32-note Slimkey keyboard while adding new creative functions including Mutate, Spice/Dice and real-time transforms for instant pattern variation. The bright OLED display and clickable encoder provide direct hardware control, reducing the need to dive into MIDI Control Centre for basic adjustments, a practical improvement for live performance and studio sessions alike.

Connectivity has been modernised with USB-C replacing the previous USB connection, joined by DIN MIDI I/O, assignable CV outputs and an additional Mod 2 CV out. Sync I/O and pedal input support round out the physical connections, while a dedicated power switch adds welcome control over the unit’s operation. This makes KeyStep mk2 capable of commanding modular systems, drum machines and vintage synths with equal ease.

The sequencer now offers 8x more memory slots, unquantized recording, Bend and Mod automation, undo functionality, step editing, and pattern chaining. Meanwhile, the arpeggiator has gained new intelligence with classic arp modes joined by Arp Reset for phrase creation and a generative Arp Pattern mode that produces fresh melodies, basslines and chord progressions based on held keys.

KeyStep mk2 maintains its compact, portable form, as well as its straightforward operation, which defined its predecessor, while addressing the creative and technical demands of contemporary production. It continues Arturia’s approach of bridging different eras and formats of electronic music making.
