Only 500 sets have been built, each hand-signed by Seymour Duncan and MJ Juarez, returning one of the brand's hottest designs to its original late-1970s specifications.
Seymour Duncan has released the Duncan Distortion Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Custom Shop Set, marking half a century since the company began shaping the sound of modern guitar.
The release honours one of Seymour Duncan’s most aggressive and enduring pickup designs. Born out of demand for hotter, harder-hitting pickups in the early days of heavy music, the Duncan Distortion was one of Seymour Duncan’s original humbucker designs, representing a defining moment in the brand’s history. Hand-built in the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop in a one-time run of just five hundred sets, the release pays tribute to a pickup that became the definitive passive metal humbucker.

At the core of the set is the Duncan Distortion bridge pickup, Seymour Duncan’s original high-output ceramic humbucker. Built with a large ceramic magnet and hot coil windings, it’s designed to deliver tight, percussive lows, searing highs, and a powerful upper midrange that cuts through a mix, retaining clarity while driving amps harder. The sonic formula remains unchanged from the production models, preserving the aggressive voice favoured by players including Randy Rhoads, George Lynch, and Adam Jones. It’s paired with the hot Seymourizer II neck pickup, later renamed the Duncan Distortion Neck, offering fluid sustain under gain alongside articulate clean tones.
The Duncan Distortion’s core design was set when production began in the late 1970s and has remained largely unchanged since, though small adjustments were made over the years to improve consistency and player flexibility, including bobbins better suited to vacuum wax potting. This anniversary version returns to the pickup’s earliest specifications, featuring butyrate bobbins, long-leg baseplates, and maple spacers, while remaining faithful to the classic Duncan Distortion tone.
Each set is built to exacting standards in the Custom Shop by a small, elite team led by Maricela “MJ” Juarez. All five hundred sets are built to original specifications and include replica “Seymourized” and model name stickers, matching the earliest builds that collectors have hunted for decades. Each set is lightly aged for vintage character, arrives in exclusive 50th Anniversary packaging, and is available in a choice of black or zebra finish. Bottom plates are hand-signed by both Seymour Duncan and Juarez.
