A cult ’80s Gibson reborn in baritone form: the Victory Baritone

Gibson Victory Baritone

The new Victory Baritone adds a 28-inch scale and B-to-B tuning to Gibson's reissued double-cutaway, landing it between a standard electric and a bass.

The Gibson Victory Baritone takes the double-cutaway shape brought back in 2024 and extends it to a 28-inch scale, tuned B to B for a register that falls between a standard electric guitar and a bass.

As an original ’80s cult favourite, the reissued Victory and Victory Figured Top have done well enough since their 2024 return for Gibson to widen the family. The Baritone keeps the double-cutaway mahogany body and the updated Victory contours, though it drops the pickguard entirely and mounts the electronics from the rear for a cleaner face.

A glued-in mahogany neck runs a 28-inch scale with a rounded profile, topped by a compound-radius ebony fretboard that flattens from 10 to 16 inches as you move up. There are 24 medium jumbo frets and acrylic dot inlays, and the Explorer-style headstock carries a Graph Tech nut and Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners. Chrome hardware finishes it off, with a Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge and a Stop Bar tailpiece.

Two newly developed Gibson Elev8 humbuckers handle the electronics, built with Alnico 8 magnets and custom-gauge wiring for a focused output that holds onto clarity and articulation in the low end. The master volume is a push-pull that splits the coils, the tone control selects the inner or outer coil once you’ve split them, and a three-way toggle runs through the humbucking and single-coil combinations. The pickups sit under zebra covers.

Out of the box, the Victory Baritone comes strung with .013 to .062 baritone strings and tuned B to B, giving a thick, low-slung voice suited to heavier and more modern styles, or to anyone curious about the ground between guitar tuning and bass. It’s available in British Racing Green or Graphite Metallic, and a Gibson hardshell case is included.
