Roland has released Melody Flip, a software built to help producers find the first idea for a track. Developed with research from Sony Computer Science Laboratories, it suggests melodies and accompaniment that you audition, pick apart and reshape into your own.

The software is made for the blank-page moment before you have a direction. It opens with around 250 Palettes, small libraries of musical ideas that each hold a melody, chords, bass and drums. Each one is a jumping-off point rather than a finished loop, meant to push you past your usual habits into grooves and styles you might not have reached on your own.
When you import an audio file, Melody Flip analyses its structure, tempo, key, chord progression, genre and mood, then suggests melodies and accompaniment that share the feel of the track without copying it. You can generate ideas again and again, keeping the directions that resonate rather than taking the first thing it hands back. The analysis comes from Sony CSL’s work in music information retrieval, so the software reads a song’s harmony, groove and mood and shapes its suggestions around them instead of pulling from a bank of stock loops.
Melody and backing parts for chords, bass and drums export as audio or MIDI, ready to import into a major DAW for further editing and the rest of the production. Roland calls Melody Flip a “music creation partner” – it floats options and you decide which melody and which direction are worth keeping. The software runs on macOS and Windows through Roland Cloud.
