NAMM 2020: PRS reveal the decadent Private Stock Dragon

A visual treat to behold, the Private Stock Dragon boasts a majestic dragon fretboard inlay designed by artist Jess Easley (famous for creating some pretty fantastic covers for the Dungeons & Dragons rulebooks in the ’80s) and set by Aulson Inlay. The fretboard features a range of pristine coluors and materials, including Green Ripple Abalone, Green Abalone Select, Black Mother of Pearl, Stabilized Sand-Shaded Holly, Red with Gold Vein Recon Stone, Raffir Stripes Black, Black and Red Raffir Aluminum Wave, Abaloid Acrylic, Nocturne Corian, as well as Blue Pacific, Citrine, and Flame Synthetic Opal.

Founder Paul Reed Smith expressed his delight with the ninth take on the Dragon design, saying that “When I was a teenager, I had a dream about a guitar with a dragon inlaid down the neck, and in 1992, I was able to realize that dream for the first time. It has become an important part of our history to celebrate the technology that allows us to create these intricate inlays and the idea that dreams can become reality. I really like this new 35th Anniversary Dragon.”

Specs wise, the 35th Anniversary Dragon, which is based off the longstanding PRS McCarty model, featues TCI model pickups, a push-pull tone control, a Stoptail bridge and Phase II locking tuners. It’s also crafted with a curly maple top, African ribbon mahogany back and a chaltecoco pattern neck, with a ziricote fretboard to match. There’s only going to be 135 of these models made, and we reckon there’s almost zero chance that any will make it to Australia, but damn is it a cool guitar.
