Kurt Cobain’s iconic MTV Unplugged Martin D-18E is up for auction

It goes without saying that this particular Martin might be one of the most recognisable ever. The 1959 model was famously desecrated modified by Cobain upon acquisition, with the Nirvana frontman adding in two Bartolini pickups to achieve his distinctive electro-acoustic tone. It’s also been said that this guitar was the last one Cobain ever played before passing away, which makes it all the more legendary.

The iconic instrument also includes its original hardshell case, complete with an array of Cobain’s own mementos, including a pack of strings, picks and a ‘stash bag’ decorated with miniature cutlery. Interestingly, it was last reported that Cobain’s Martin was no longer within the trust of the family, with Frances Bean Cobain allegedly leaving the instrument to her ex-husband as part of a divorce settlement.

If you’re keen to take a punt on the guitar, you’ll need to attend Julien’s Music Icons event in Beverly Hills on June 19-20. The cherished Martin is estimated to fetch around $1 million USD (just over $1.5 AUD), which probably means it’ll be snapped up by some coal mining billionaire and kept in a safe for the rest of eternity. Can’t imagine Kurt would be too happy with that.
