News: Tom Waits’ fedora up for auction

Tom Waits

In a (pardon the pun) bid to support WGA and SAG-AFTRA film workers in a time of need, The Union Solidarity Coalition (TUSC) will auction off Waits’ fedora to raise money for union members' access to healthcare while striking.

Tom Waits’ gravelly, emotive voice is the stuff of legend. His lyricism often speaks to the underbelly of life, the dark and sometimes dank edges of everyday life. Emerging from the jazz scenes in the 70s, Waits progressed to integrate elements of vaudeville, blues and rock through the 80s, his legacy and silhouette often paired with a fedora.

In a (pardon the pun) bid to support WGA and SAG-AFTRA film workers in a time of need, The Union Solidarity Coalition (TUSC) will auction off Waits’ fedora to raise money for union members’ access to healthcare while striking.

TUSC co-founder Lena Dunham said:

We founded TUSC because, as striking writers, we feel an incredible kinship with the crew (IATSE. LiUNA and Teamsters) that make our jobs possible—and right now they are hurting, especially when it comes to healthcare.”

The fedora joins other film and TV memorabilia, including the Hawaiian shirt from Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, a Donald Glover autographed script for the pilot of Atlanta, as well as dinner with Bob Odenkirk and David Cross.

Striking against work conditions and expectations, film workers’ access to healthcare are reliant on the number of days worked.
