NEURAL KARAOKE TECHNOLOGY WISHES YOU A VERY EMOTIONLESS CHRISTMAS

Calling the technology ‘neural karaoke’, the scientists came upon the idea as part of a broader research project to get computers to write music, lyrics and dance routines.

The following example was created by feeding the program an image of a Christmas tree, following which it used its database of over 100 songs to create an original variation of melody and form, along with some lyrics it deemed relevant. Of course, it still sounds like the robot from 2001 A Space Odyssey and the words are completely random, but hey, it is probably better than the new Michael Buble` effort.

“Instead of buying a karaoke machine with certain tracks on it, you can create your own karaoke at home by throwing in some interesting photos and inviting the machine to generate music for you,” Sanja Fidler from the Toronto science lab told The Guardian, possibly somewhat optimisitcally. “I think it has endless possibilities.”
