All genre category awards will now be given based on work released in past year, not based on a singular album.

The Music Victoria Awards are back for 2021. Despite the past year being a bizarre and difficult time for Victoria’s entire music community, there are still plenty of achievements to celebrate and commemorate.

Now in its 17th iteration, the Music Victoria Awards will debut the Best Pop Act award category in 2021, and have simplified constraints for the industry-voted genre categories.

What you need to know

  • The Music Victoria Awards make their return in 2021

In order to address contemporary shifts in the release and consumption of music, artists will now be assessed on their ‘act’ rather than their album. The participant must, however, have released multiple recordings in the eligible time period.

Due to the COVID circumstances of the past year, the categories for Best Venue, Festival and Live Act can include livestreaming activity from Victorian venues, festivals and artists in the eligible time period.

Music Victoria’s newly-appointed CEO, Simone Schinkel, said she had tried to spend her early days in the role “listening to the industry” and was “delighted” to implement the changes based on what she had been hearing.

“As part of our commitment to continual improvement we have refined our Awards criteria, categories and judging processes which we believe will more accurately reflect and reward the diverse music community in Victoria,” she said.

“A Music Victoria Award nomination results in increased promotion, recognition and attention on your music, career, venue or festival – we encourage our members to get involved.”

To nominate for the awards, you need to be an active Music Victoria member, with concession memberships starting at $33.

Submissions for the 2021 Music Victoria Awards are open from now until midnight Tuesday July 20. To make your vote count, head here.
