Rising star Maina Doe, following a sold-out appearance at Vivid Sydney, has released her new single “LET HER BE”. A star studded production team worked on the track, including 18YOMAN (Kid Cudi, Lil Nas X), LEN20 (Cordae, Mary J Blige) and UNO Stereo (Khalid, Kaiit), so it’s no wonder the song hits like it does. A consistent stream of singles over the last few years has seen Maina Doe slowly hone her sound, and “LET HER BE” feels like a crescendo of sorts.

“I wrote this song imagining a young, free woman living in a world that is obsessed with humbling carefree black girls. I imagine her living as whoever she decides to be in the night, embodying the most suppressed parts of herself when she goes out. I imagine someone trying to get close to her, only to realise that you may never really know her.”

There’s a confidence in the production and vocal delivery, Maina having found her own unique voice amongst the 2000s R&B nostalgia and bass that kicks you in the chest. Hailing from the Indonesian city of Bandung, Maina enveloped herself in the Sydney creative scene and pulls influence from every step along her way. Her sound is familiar and pays homage to her influences, but consistently in her own way, having a vast pool of inspirations that inform her music.

A surreal, dreamy video clip accompanies the clip, the fleeting nature of the protagonist in the lyric informing the visuals.

Following features from artists like Genesis Owusu, and now the release of “LET HER BE”, Maina Doe is sure to turn heads in the coming years. Bringing all that is good with the nostalgia of 2000s club R&B, with a dedicated, future-thinking and contemporary mindset, Maina Doe is surely one to watch.
