Today, the owner’s of Melbourne’s Last Chance Rock ‘n’ Roll Bar have confirmed they’ve managed to secure the purchase of the Tote, with intentions to put it into a trust to be retained as a live music venue for future generations. The Tote opened its doors in 1980, the building having operated as a pub since the late 1800s, and became a breeding ground for some of Australia’s best musicians, some of which have gone on to international acclaim.

Post-pandemic financial strain pushed the venue’s current owners to sell the business, and Shane and Leanne of The Last Chance launched a campaign to help save The Tote, putting their own business and equity into the pot and requiring community help to make up the difference. Since the campaign ended a few months ago, it’s been a rollercoaster of speculation, with radio silence from Shane and Leanne as contracts, financing and plans all go through, but today sees the official word that The Tote has been sold and will continue as the historic venue that it is.
