Show & Tell: Toby Peterson-Stewart from The Omnific

What piece of equipment do you have to show us today?

I’ve got my Ernie Ball Music Man Bongo five-string, in Firemist Purple with black hardware.

How did you come across this particular item?

When my band (The Omnific) were playing at the Melbourne Guitar Show earlier this year, we came across a purple Bongo hanging on the wall of the CMC booth, then two weeks later I bought it. I’ve been familiar with the Bongo for a while now because the other bassist in my band (Matt) owns two of them, so it was a no brainer when picking it as an appropriate sounding bass for our kind of music.

What is it that you like about it so much?

I grew up playing Music Mans and they really feel like home to me. The double humbuckers allow clarity while still providing a huge harmonic sound, and the evenness across the fretboard really assists having a cohesive tone when playing anywhere from the first fret to the 24th fret.

How do you use it and how has it shaped the way you write music?

My band (The Omnific) tends to utilise the bass as a lead and rhythm instrument in our songs, which means it’s got to sound silky and smooth on the high strings yet still chunky on the low strings. Again, the clarity that is achieved from the bass’ design allows for this to be possible and to open up different chord voicings without getting too muddy.

Tell us a little about what you have coming up?

We just released our second EP Kismet which you can pick up from our Bandcamp, iTunes or stream on Spotify.

Kismet is available now via Bandcamp, Spotify and iTunes.
