Peter Bibby and His Bottles of Confidence; it’s a wonderful name for a band and an apt description of Bibby’s songwriting. Bibby’s debut LP Butcher/Hairstylist/Beautician contains plenty of the tales detailing where mass-boozing will lead you – the goon-swigging highs and the lonesome lows. One of Bibby’s onstage bottles is Nick Allbrook and their live shows are essentially expositions of alcohol-fueled confidence.

Glass Skies
Rock/ Groove
I’m inclined to describe the music of Adelaide’s Glass Skies as wank rock. But it’s hard to justify that as a compliment without it reflecting poorly on myself. Anyway, this is sexy music that no doubt provides its creators with immense sensual satisfaction – think something along the lines of Jamiroquai meets Queens of the Stone Age.

James Parry
Indie twee
You know the scene in Garden State – basically the only one worth remembering – where Natalie Portman’s character describes The Shins as life-changing? Well, one thing’s for certain, The Shins changed Hobart songwriter James Parry’s life. Parry’s clean melodic indie pop owes considerable debt to The Shins’ James Mercer. But we’re not mad at him, as he makes it work wonderfully well.

This Adelaide band are angry. The shouty, ropable vocals and cement thick distorted guitars indicate that these guys utilise music as an outlet for letting off steam. Shit, just listening to this makes you want to forgo rationality and start knocking over everything within reach.

Melbourne four-piece Flour’s brand of motorik punk rock would’ve fit perfectly next to the Hard-Ons and The Meanies at 3am on a 1994 episode of rage. They’ve got a new 7” out through Poison City Records and this Friday evening they’re heading across the street for an in-store at Polyester Records.

Doom Mountain
Garage Blues
Despite what their band name anticipates, this isn’t drop-C doom metal. Doom Mountain are actually a chirpy garage rock collective. The band’s tunes are fitted out with canny vocal melodies, only they’re stuffed into the fabric of pleasingly upbeat, jangly arrangements.

Surf Punk
Perth’s Aborted Tortoise are suited to playing in the corner of a dingy hovel with plenty of human limbs pointing in topsy-turvy directions. It’s messy, bratty punk delivered with an exemplary ‘who-cares’ attitude.

The Pinheads
Fuzz’n’roll
The ‘Gong is responsible for one of the finest fuzzy rock bands Australia’s ever produced– Tumbleweed. Tumbleweed took inspiration from the likes of MC5, The Stooges and Bad Brains. These seem like exactly the sort of bands that have informed the sound of budding Wollongong outfit The Pinheads. This Saturday the band are hosting a home town launch for their new single ‘I Wanna Be A Girl’.

The Floors
Blues Rock
The Floors make muscular blues rock. Despite the band’s largely unhinged character, there’s definite precision to everything they do, which makes it all the more intimidating. The vocals can barely keep below a howl and the bass playing is like a brutish staffy bull terrier that just won’t sit still.

The fourth Sonic Youth album is called Sister. Melbourne band No Sister are so guilty of borrowing from that album that their band name is a defense. Luckily they’re bloody good at it. In fact, there’s serious ‘new favourite band’ danger here.
