The M20xSTS runs 40mm drivers with rare-earth magnets and copper-clad aluminium voice coils, tuned for full-range audio with enhanced bass. The headphones measure a frequency response of 15 Hz to 20,000 Hz, wide enough to please even the most demanding basshead without skimping on the finer detail.
That range means the M20xSTS handles what it was designed for – content creation, live streams and high-impact gaming – and stays enjoyable across the lot. During my time with them I found myself reaching for the M20xSTS more often than headphones several times the price.
Audio-Technica has put the same care into the built-in microphone. A cardioid condenser based on the 20 Series mics, it has a measured frequency response of 50 Hz to 20,000 Hz at 3 cm, and its directional pattern helps it reject unwanted background noise – no small thing when you’re making professional content or deep in your favourite AAA and indie titles.
The mic mounts to the headset on a flexible but sturdy boom arm, which left me with no reason to doubt it would hold up to even the most enthusiastic gamer. Positioning it is easy – so much so that I barely noticed it was there while testing.
Comfort is a strong point. At just 230g, the headset never became a chore over long sessions the way plenty of others do. The breathable mesh earpads stayed comfortable after hours of wear, and not once did I find myself shifting the headband from fatigue or sore ears.
Out of the box, the M20xSTS comes with a detachable 3.5mm TRRS cable, a handy 2 metres long – plenty whether you’re at the desk or back on the couch. Audio-Technica has also included USB-C and USB-A adapters, so it’s plug-and-play across a range of devices from the start.
Connecting was straightforward across everything I tried, from modern smartphones to the headphone jack on a standard PS5 controller. I didn’t hit a single dropout, or find a current device I couldn’t easily plug into.
The sound is impactful and immersive. These revealed subtle details in media I know well, and as someone forever wearing and testing headphones, it’s always nice to be caught off guard like that.
The same goes for the mic and boom. The arm is plenty flexible without feeling like it’ll snap under pressure, and that mix of flex and durability meant one adjustment was enough for the whole test – I could just get on with the task at hand.
Audio captured through the condenser mic delivers on Audio-Technica’s claims, with clear voice pickup and solid rejection of background noise. One feature I really warmed to was the mute – just flip the boom arm up when the mic isn’t needed mid-match or mid-stream.
It’s good to see Audio-Technica refine an already classic set of headphones for a new crowd. The M20xSTS StreamSet brings quality sound, reliable build and multi-device compatibility in spades, and it should do well once it reaches stores.
