Warm Audio launches new active and passive stereo DIs

Stereo DI
Words by Mixdown

Both models feature CineMag USA transformers and are designed for keyboards, synths and stereo instrument rigs.

Warm Audio has released two new stereo direct boxes, aimed at the instruments that a standard mono DI has never served particularly well. Keyboards, synths, stereo pedalboards, guitar modellers and laptop playback rigs all benefit from having both channels handled by the same box, and that’s exactly what these are built to do.

Catch up on all the latest news here.

Both models are equipped with custom-wound CineMag USA transformers, which take care of the signal conversion while preserving the tonal character of whatever you plug in. CineMag transformers are well-regarded in pro audio circles, and their presence here does a lot of the heavy lifting for signal integrity and tonal preservation. The transformer-balanced design delivers balanced XLR outputs at mic level, with a 600-ohm output impedance and a 1-megohm input impedance that’s compatible with most instrument sources.

The distinction between the two models comes down to your source. The Passive Stereo DI requires no external power and suits lower-impedance sources like keyboards, drum machines and acoustic-electrics that already have enough output to drive a passive circuit cleanly. The Active Stereo DI draws 48V phantom power from the connected mixer or interface and adds selectable active circuitry on a per-channel basis, making it the better option for high-impedance sources or situations where you’re mixing different signal types across the two channels. The active circuitry can be switched off at the channel level too, so the active model picks up some of the passive model’s flexibility when needed.

Both come with a variable pad ranging from -3dB to -30dB and a ground/lift switch for dealing with ground-loop noise – useful on a live stage and in the studio. Construction is rugged aluminium, and Warm Audio backs each unit with a five-year warranty, with every unit hand-tested at its Austin, Texas facility.

For anyone running stereo instrument rigs into FOH or a recording interface, these are purpose-built tools rather than a compromise.
