Leading the pack is legendary soul singer Mavis Staples, regarded as one of the most important singers of our time for her contributions to music and the civil rights movement. Despite celebrating her 80th birthday this year, Staples is still in strong form, and seeing her is most definitely what you’d consider to be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
The WOMADelaide 2020 lineup also boasts ‘the Golden Voice of Africa’ Salif Keita, who’ll be visiting the country on his farewell tour to celebrate 50 years in the music industry, as well as local neo-soul pioneers Hiatus Kaiyote and brass heavyparty starters The Cat Empire for their fifth WOMADelaide appearance. There’s also set to be performances from lo-fi legend Bill Callahan, UK jazz ensemble Ezra Collective, New Zealand indie sensation Aldous Harding, Japanese psych-lords Kikagaku Moyo, Odette and more.
WOMADelaide is set to go down in Adelaide’s Botanic Park from Friday 6 – Monday 9 March next year – check out the first lineup announcement in its entirety below.
