Flying Lotus and Ludovico Einaudi announced for Tasmania’s Mona Foma

Mona Foma is curated by none other than Violent Femmes’ bass player Brian Ritchie, and goes down in sleepy old Launceston from January 11 – 20. If you’ve never been to Tasmania and want to escape some of that brutal mid-summer heat – or the tennis – we reckon this is the perfect time to book in a getaway.

Obviously, the main drawing card here is Flying Lotus, who’ll be performing his unique Flying Lotus 3D show for Mona Foma. A direct familial descendent of John Coltrane and a disciple of J Dilla, Fly Lo’s blend of jazz, funk, hip-hop and abstract experimental textures has seen him collaborate with everyone from Kendrick Lamar and Mac Miller to Kimbra. His most recent release, this year’s Flamagra, epitomises all that the man does well into one expansive project, and boy we can’t wait to see it performed in the flesh.

If you like your music quiet and void of wonky jazz-funk (what a shame), you’ll probably be into Ludovico Einaudi, the Italian composer known for his cinematic piano scores and classical smarts. He’ll be performing his immersive new project Seven Days Walking at Mona Foma, which is based on a recent walk he took in the Alps. Isn’t that wholesome?

In a statement, Brian Ritchie explained the two initial picks, saying that “Ludovico and FlyLo represent extremes in music making. Ludovico, meditative and interrogating, FlyLo, an immersive sound and visual spectacle. Literally a spectacle because you’ll need your 3D specs. They are bookends in a program that can embrace such polarity in the name of unbridled individual expression.”

The full 2020 program will be announced on Friday October 18, with all tickets on sale Monday October 21 via the Mona Foma website
