The Bob Moog Foundation brought synthesisers to Grand Turk Island – and 80 kids got to play them

The Bob Moog Foundation joined Jam Cruise's 22nd voyage to deliver its Dr. Bob's SoundSchool programme to primary school students on Grand Turk Island.

There’s something quietly brilliant about a music festival doubling as a classroom. The Bob Moog Foundation recently set sail aboard Jam Cruise on the MSC Divina, departing Miami on 7 February 2026. Two days into the voyage, the Foundation took its Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool programme ashore at Grand Turk Island, where 80 students at Eliza Simons Primary School spent the day exploring the science of sound, from vibrations and waveforms through to getting their hands on Moog synthesisers and theremins.

For many of the kids, it was their first encounter with a synth. That’s exactly what Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool is built around – a 10-week curriculum that connects STEM concepts like pitch, frequency and circuitry to real, playable instruments, making the science tangible rather than theoretical. Since 2011, the programme has reached over 40,000 students.

The day of service was funded through a grant from Positive Legacy, the nonprofit arm of cruise music event organiser Cloud 9 Adventures. Positive Legacy Board Member Russ Farr has attended more than 40 such service days and described this one as a standout: “Bringing the hands-on teaching of Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool to the students on Grand Turk was one of the best experiences to date. Watching the excitement and wonder the kids had while playing with the instruments was beyond words and warmed every heart that saw it.”

Back on board the Divina, the Foundation also ran two Synth Playgrounds open to Jam Cruise festival-goers, offering a chance to experiment with synthesisers, theremins and some hard-to-find Moogerfooger processing pedals.

Now in its 22nd year, Jam Cruise is a five-night floating music festival that brings together dozens of artists across multiple stages for non-stop performances and collaborative jams at sea. This year’s route took in Grand Turk and Ocean Cay in the Bahamas.

“This experience was a prime example of how our enriched educational program inspires young students from a variety of backgrounds and learning styles,” said Michelle Moog-Koussa, Executive Director of the Bob Moog Foundation. “We are deeply grateful to Positive Legacy and Jam Cruise for making this opportunity possible.”
