Spotify rolls out an AI Persona badge for AI-generated artists

Spotify AI Persona badge

From mid-September, profiles believed to be AI-generated will show the badge and be removed from Spotify's editorial and algorithmic recommendations.

Spotify is putting a label on AI artists from mid-September. An AI Persona badge will start appearing on profiles the platform believes represent an AI-generated identity rather than a real person, and any music behind those profiles will be kept out of Spotify’s recommendations by default.

Notably, the badge is about who the artist claims to be, not how the track was made. It flags that a profile’s public identity, such as the name and imagery an artist presents, appears to be a photorealistic AI creation rather than a human. Someone using AI tools in the studio and releasing under their own name won’t be flagged as an AI Persona, however, for disclosing how a song was actually put together, Spotify will use separate flags: AI Credits and SongDNA features.

Artists can label themselves from today through Spotify for Artists, though the company has said it won’t rely on self-disclosure alone. Its review team will also assess profiles and apply badges where it decides an identity is AI-generated, starting with artists who have passed certain audience thresholds so the labels cover most of the profiles listeners visit. Artists flagged this way are notified and can either self-disclose or appeal, and a listener reporting tool is due in the coming months. Once live, the badge will show up in the profile banner and About section, in Search and on track rows across playlists. Tapping it will show whether the artist has owned up to being an AI Persona or if Spotify made that call.

AI Personas will stay out of editorial and algorithmic picks unless a listener specifically follows them. Spotify frames this as part of a trust push alongside Verified by Spotify and its stated aim of keeping “spam, slop, or low-effort content” out of recommendations.
