Sennheiser has announced a fresh production run of the MD 9235 microphone head, reviving the discontinued cardioid capsule following persistent requests from touring sound professionals who never quite warmed to life without it.

Designed for wireless handheld use, the MD 9235 built a devoted following for its ability to cut through high on-stage levels and reject crosstalk, even when performers wander in front of the PA. When Sennheiser discontinued the capsule in 2020 and introduced the MM 435 and MM 445 mic heads as successors, those replacements quickly found their own fans – but the MD 9235 requests kept coming anyway.

Catch up on all the latest news here.

“When the MM 435 mic head and the MM 445 high-rejection head succeeded the MD 9235 in 2020, they quickly built their own fanbase,” explains product manager Sebastian Schmitz. “But we still had enquiries for the MD 9235 coming in, even after years had passed since its discontinuation. So we sat together with our development and manufacturing engineers and examined how we could revive the [MD 9235]. We had samples thoroughly tested by several touring sound engineers and they were thrilled to have the MD 9235 back.”

The capsule’s appeal isn’t hard to understand. With a lightweight aluminium-copper microphone coil that moves faster than conventional coils, it delivers detail and transparency that holds up in demanding live environments. The cardioid pick-up pattern accurately and powerfully reproduces vocals while rejecting ambient noise from the sides and rear – a combination that suits artists who move dynamically on stage, and who frequently end up in front of the speakers.

Technically, the specs back it up: a frequency response of 40 Hz to 20,000 Hz (±2 dB), a maximum SPL of 163 dB, and a weight of just 119 g. Compatibility is broad, covering Spectera, Digital 6000, Digital 9000, EW-DX, EW-D, EW-DP, 2000 series, and evolution wireless G4 300 and 500 series systems. Each unit ships with a pouch and five replacement foam inlays.
