Mango isn’t a wood you see often on electric guitars, which is part of what makes this run interesting. PRS Guitars Senior Wood Manager Michael Reid describes it, stating, “Mango wood (Mangifera Indica) is similar to maple but a bit lighter in weight and a little less dense. There is quite a bit of variety in the figure, which very often shows what is referred to as a ‘bee’s wing’ pattern.”
Beyond the aesthetics, mango has practical sustainability behind it. Grown as a farmed tree primarily for fruit production, the wood is harvested once the tree ages and its yield declines – meaning no tree is felled specifically for timber. That makes it an appealing choice for builders and buyers who care about where their tonewoods come from. Mango has a history across ukuleles, acoustic guitars, electric guitars and even percussive instruments, and has been gaining favour in the guitar world over recent decades.
What sets each individual top apart is the organic variation in the figure. Some pieces show softly flowing patterns while others lean into dramatic, high-contrast figuring, so every guitar in the limited run is unique. Paired with ziricote on the fretboard and headstock veneer, the overall aesthetic is rich and distinctive without straying too far from what makes the Core Series models so enduringly popular.
For collectors and players alike, limited runs like this from PRS tend to move quickly.
