However, that might all change with the introduction of the Phonocut. Set to be introduced on Kickstarter this week, this ingenious device is designed to “reinvent record production” by allowing users to record music to blank LPs in the space of their own home.
While it’s not quite the same as all the high-end thought and detail that goes into cutting records in a pressing plant, the Phonocut is definitely a whole lot easier. All you need to do is place a blank record on the platter, connect the Phonocut to an audio input and push the Start button, and your audio will be tracked directly to wax. We’re not exactly sure how crystal clear the sound quality will end up here, but it’s definitely a concept worth getting behind!
Utilising 10 inch blank records, the Phonocut allows you to cut around 10 – 15 minutes of audio per side, and the records should be playable on any hifi system. Apparently wireless recording is also in development, so you’ll have to stay tuned to hear more about that.
