PRS unveil the decadent Private Stock Paul’s 85 range

Limited to only 85 models worldwide, the PRS Private Stock Paul’s 85 is crafted from a stock of illustrious wide-curl maple tops, with Paul personally selecting each top and playing all 85 models until he was happy with them.

According to PRS, Paul Reed Smith had previously set the stock of wide-curl maple aside himself for a bespoke project, with the company claiming that “Paul Reed Smith knew they should be saved for something special. That special something ended up being the Paul’s 85.”

Each model also features a slick Peruvian mahogany neck and Honduran rosewood fretboard, as well as headstock veneers, solid red abalone bird inlays with mother of pearl outlines, vintage tuners, bone nuts and an aluminium stop-tail bridge.

A pair of PRS TCI pickups are loaded in the neck and bridge position of each model, while coil-tapping switches allow players to unlock a broader spectrum of single-coil tones.

Each instrument also boasts a beautiful Electric Tiger Glow finish, with the PRS Private Stock team employing a personalised method to create the figured, striped grain effect atop of the wide-curl maple.

Reflecting on the construction of the bespoke range, Paul Reed Smith said that “We believe guitar making is an ongoing process of discovery, and this Paul’s 85 guitar utilizes all of the parts, processes, and workmanship I have spent my career (to date) seeking, testing, refining, and teaching our craftsman.

“My hope is that these benchmark instruments are something remarkable for our company and the industry. There is no better way to close out our 35th Anniversary than with these extraordinary, hopefully magic, guitars.”
