METALLICA’S KIRK HAMMETT DETAILS PEDALS USED ON NEW ALBUM

Thankfully fans will be spared a sleepless night, as the metallic gods have announced that they will be incrementally releasing videos for the entire album, starting from right now. New film clips for each of Hardwired..To Self Destruct’s 14 tracks are currently being made live on the band’s website.

Touted as a return to the thrash metal stylings of their 1980s albums, something that was hinted at by 2008’s Rick Rubin assisted Death Magnetic, early indications of the new material have had fans salivating.

Central to the sound of Hardwired…To Self Destruct is guitarist Kirk Hammett’s own line of pedals, KHDK Electronics. As detailed to Total Guitar, the company’s latest release – the Dark Blood distortion pedal – features particularly heavily on the tracks.

“It’s based on this one pedal I found in Europe,” said Hammett. “I bought it and never saw another one again. I think they only made it for like six months. So I said, ‘we need to break open this pedal and improve on it.'”

Described as having a heavy mid tone and extra high gain, the Dark Blood combines solid state and MOSFET engineering. The pedal features both a treble booster, a noise gate, and a ‘doom’ switch that adjusts pre-distortion EQ.

“As a lead guitar player, if you plug into that pedal it would be hard for you not to just want to instantly rip,” said Hammett. “It’s one of those pedals that if you plug into it, it just demands that you start playing a guitar solo.”

KHDK Electronic pedals can be purchased in Australia from Eastgate Music.

Metallica’s Hardwired…To Self Destruct is released on Friday November 18 and can be ordered in various physical and digital configurations from metallica.com.
