The new device slots into the UNIO ecosystem alongside the existing 9401A, giving studios a choice of Dante, Ravenna or AES67 networking.
Genelec has announced the 9402A System Management Device, a 1U rack-mount unit that adds Dante and AES67 compatibility to its Smart Active Monitors and Subwoofers. It joins the existing 9401A, which covers Ravenna, ST2110 and AES67, meaning Genelec’s UNIO monitoring ecosystem now spans all three major Audio-over-IP protocols. Where studios previously had to choose between networked audio standards, the 9402A and 9401A together cover the lot.

The 9402A handles up to 16 channels of digital audio via a DB25 connector, with dedicated AES/EBU XLR outputs for subwoofer integration and auxiliary stereo monitoring. Sampling rates go up to 192kHz at up to 32-bit depth, all processed in the digital domain with no analogue conversion in the signal path. Channel capacity scales by chaining additional 9402A units, with support for formats ranging from stereo to 22.2 immersive audio.
Integration with Genelec’s GLM software covers full system calibration, bass management and subwoofer alignment. On the network side, the 9402A runs on Gigabit Ethernet with support for redundant connectivity – a backup network path that kicks in if the primary connection drops – and Dante Media Encryption using AES 256-bit audio transport. Routing via OSI Layer 3 means audio can travel across different IP subnets or between buildings on a wide-area network, which matters for larger broadcast and post-production facilities. Power efficiency gets a nod too, with Genelec’s Intelligent Signal Sensing technology reducing consumption during idle periods, and the single network cable connection cuts down on rack cabling compared to traditional point-to-point AES/EBU setups.
“As studios, broadcast facilities, and live venues move rapidly towards reliable, high-quality IP-based audio signal flows, there is a clear need for precision reference monitoring that can integrate seamlessly into these environments. With the new 9402A now sitting alongside our existing 9401A model, Genelec Smart Active Monitoring systems can now be deployed across Dante, Ravenna or AES67 networks,” says Genelec Managing Director Siamäk Naghian.
