The ATH-WP900SE uses solid ash wood, the same material found in electric guitars and basses, to deliver a clear sound field with warm, rich tones.
Audio-Technica has announced the ATH-WP900SE, a limited edition over-ear headphone designed around the acoustic properties of solid ash wood, the same material traditionally used in electric guitars and basses.

Made from solid ash, the earcups have been chosen for their grain finish and acoustic characteristics. Audio-Technica has been working with wood in headphone design since 1996, when it introduced the ATH-W10VTG, and has been analysing different timber types ever since. The WP900SE’s ash housing, not merely chosen for its aesthetic appeal, combines with custom 53mm dynamic drivers made exclusively for this model. A redesigned voice coil improves the linearity of driving force, equalised ventilation behind the drivers suppresses asymmetric vibration and unwanted resonance, and an optimised acoustic port shape tightens up the low-frequency response.
The headband and earpads use smooth synthetic leather with a three-dimensional sewing pattern, and both are low-rebound to reduce pressure during longer listening sessions. The headphones use Audio-Technica’s A2DC (Audio Designed Detachable Coaxial) connectors for connectivity, which eliminate signal loss and maintain stable transmission even when the cable moves. Inside the box are two cables: a 1.2m balanced cable with a 4.4mm 5-pole plug and a 1.2m cable with a 3.5mm stereo mini-plug, covering Hi-Res Audio players and balanced headphone amplifiers. Also included is a pouch to store the headphones, which fold flat.
