Kurt Cobain’s original Jag-Stang prototype to hit the auction block

Although the name is a bit of a giveaway, Cobain’s Jag-Stang is the hybrid concoction of a Fender Mustang and Jaguar, which Cobain originally envisioned by slicing two polaroid photos of the guitars in half and sticking them back together. Created by Fender Custom Shop Master Builder Larry Brooks, Cobain’s original Fiesta Red prototype model featured a Texas Special singlecoil in the neck position and a DiMarzio H-3 humbucker in the bridge, and was reportedly being packed up to send to Cobain for final evaluation when news of his death broke in April 1994. While the Nirvana frontman never actually played the aforementioned model, Cobain performed with an earlier Sonic Blue prototype of the Jag-Stang for the entirety of the band’s final full-length show in Slovenia.

In addition to the prototype guitar, the auction includes a rare composite drawing of Cobain’s original design for the instrument, with handwritten notes depicting his wishes for the body of the guitar. The auction is set to be hosted by Julien’s Auctions, where the guitar is expected to go for around $40,000 – $60,000.
