Former Journey frontman Steve Perry covers ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’

The Christmas single was originally written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane for Judy Garland in the MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis, and is currently the 15th most performed Christmas song, according to ASCAP. Perry released the single to celebrate and thank fans for their support during his first year back in the music industry.

“This has been a big year of firsts for me,” said Perry. “In keeping with that spirit, I thought I’d record a little Christmas card song and send it out to you to thank you for all of your kindness in welcoming me back.

“Have yourself a merry little Christmas. I hope you enjoy it.”

2018 saw the release of Traces – the vocalist’s first solo record since 1994’s For The Love Of Strange Medicine. Perry hasn’t expressed regret over his hiatus, instead claiming it was the right time to return.

“For a long time, I could barely even listen to music,” Perry said in a statement on his website. “My last show with Journey was in February of 1987. Then one day, it hit me that I couldn’t do this anymore. I felt as if I had to jump off this merry-go-round — this big beautiful mothership that we had all worked so hard together to build.”

“I would not come back to it now unless I could be absolutely emotionally honest about the music,” Perry adds. “I’m not trying to top what I’ve done in the past, or better anyone or anything. That stuff doesn’t matter to me now. In a way, it’s this simple: when I had something to say again, I said it. All I’m trying to do now is make music that really matters to me and I hope maybe will really matter to other people too.”
